Netvibes provides Yahoo Mail support

Monday January 2, 2006 at 7:31 am

Just a quick note from my vacation :-)

Netvibes has now provided support for Yahoo Mail. I've been waiting for this for a long time since I use my Yahoo Mail a lot more than Gmail. You have to enable POP3 access in order to use it (Which I have since I have an upgraded Yahoo account, but I'm not sure if it's provided in the regular accounts). Clicking on the email title takes you directly to your Yahoo mail account, but not directly to the message. I'm still trying to figure out how to mark all of the messages as "Read".

Now back to my vacation and my new PSP! Happy New Year!

Yahoo and Six Apart team up

Monday December 12, 2005 at 7:24 am

Yahoo has been very busy these past couple of days. First they acquire del.icio.us and now they have teamed up with the folks behind the popular blogging software, Movable Type and the TypePad service, Six Apart. The terms of Yahoo's deal with Six Apart is that the Yahoo will be the preferred provider of the Movable Type for small business users. It appears it will offered with Yahoo's small business management service for a fee of $11.95 per month.

Six Apart is also working on a version of Movable Type that will run on Oracle database software in an attempt to appeal to bigger businesses.

Is it me or is Yahoo making all the big moves that we thought Google would make?

Yahoo Intros Email Folder - perfect for RSS newbies

Wednesday November 30, 2005 at 7:42 am

Picture 13

This morning I was greeted with a brand new folder (All RSS Feeds) in my Yahoo! Mail account. Today, Yahoo starts testing their new "email folder" that is uses RSS to help users track recent info on websites. Previously Yahoo just allowed users to track RSS feeds on their My Yahoo! pages, but now select users will be able to create an email folder with all the RSS feeds they want to track.

Picture 14

I currently use the new Yahoo! Mail Beta, but I switched back to the classic Yahoo! Mail to see if the new service was there, but couldn't find the new RSS folders, so I'm assuming that it's just available in the Beta version. I've played around with it briefly and I like it. You can drag posts just like emails, forward them via email, Post to Yahoo 360, or save to Yahoo's My Web service. Adding a feed is simple, just paste the feed's URL into the Add box.

One thing that I didn't see is the ability to see how many RSS feeds had new content or an unread/read status which is basic in almost all feed readers. However, you can choose to receive Yahoo Alerts whenever a feed is updated. You're also not able to group feeds into folders, which if I added all of my 100+ feeds, would be a nightmare. Speaking of adding all of my feeds, there's not an option to import/export, so you'll have to individually add each feed. It also appears that deleting a feed from your folder deletes it from your My Yahoo! page, which isn't a good idea at all. But…it is just a beta service so it's not perfect. I'll be sending feedback for a couple of items.

But, this new "email folder" does have potential and should widen RSS' appeal to a more mainstream audience. Yahoo also states that feed search, feed import/export and much more are coming.

Right now, it is perfect for those people who haven't used RSS before or who only track a few feeds. Those who are power users probably won't use it all because they've already found a perfect solution for their feeds.

In more Yahoo news, the company is set to release a Yahoo branded cell phone that will through SBC Communications, while Google has enabled Java-enabled cell phone users to access their Google Maps and Local service to view satellite maps and conduct searches for businesses/services.  The new software will debut today and will allow users to skip some of the steps that have been required in the current mobile version.  The software WILL NOT work on Verizon phones, Blackberry devices or Palm devices.

Yahoo11-5
Yahoo's phone will be on the Cingular network, manufactured by Nokia and will feature a 1.3 megapixel camera, mp3 player, and removeable memory card and retails for $200-$300 sometime next year.  Of course, consumers should expect the phone to be linked in tightly with Yahoo's online services.
